Character design – Goblin
Year: 2021
About the project:
Inventing new characters is always one of the most fun parts of my creative process – especially when it involves fantasy creatures and storytelling potential. This project was created as part of the Skillshare class Telling a Character’s Story with a 2D Looped Animation. The goal was to design an original character with strong visual traits and personality, suitable for a short animation.
Brief:
The character had to meet a specific set of traits:
Process:
I began with a series of pencil sketches exploring proportions, ear shapes, nose types, and expressions. Based on those, I developed a full-body front-facing digital design, followed by three color variations, from which the final palette was chosen.
To further build the character’s depth, I created a profile portrait, two emotional expressions, and a few small accessories (like her favorite food, a pouch of coins, and a weapon).
I chose a simplified comic/animated style – bold lines, flat colors, and subtle shading – ideal for readability and usability in animation or small-scale illustrations.
