Stylizace – Style Study – 5 Ways I Draw

Year: 2021

About the project:
One of the things I love most about illustration is the playfulness and versatility of styles. Depending on the mood, purpose, or project brief, I adapt my approach to fit what the artwork needs.

In this study, I showcased five of my favorite character illustration styles – ranging from heavily stylized to realistic.
To make the comparison clearer, I used the same subject in each version: a self-portrait.

Style 1 – Burton-Inspired
Influenced by the works of Tim Burton. Elongated proportions, soft shading, and a dark, whimsical tone. Perfect for eerie, atmospheric scenes or highly expressive comics.

Style 2 – Simplified Stylized
A minimalist look with basic lines, minimal shading, and expressive features. Ideal for simple animations, web illustrations, or short humorous comics.

Style 3 – Comic Style
Bold outlines, semi-realistic proportions, and dramatic shading. Works great for fantasy or action-themed comics where clarity and visual impact matter.

Style 4 – Disney-Inspired
Softer linework, larger eyes, more complex shading, and friendly expressions. This style draws from the aesthetic of classic animated films and is well-suited for fairytale or character-driven stories.

Style 5 – Realistic
Detailed lineart, subtle rendering, and true-to-life proportions. I use this style when I want the illustration to feel more grounded and refined – for example, in portraits or serious editorial work.

I love exploring new approaches and I’m not afraid to mix styles when the project allows for it. I enjoy finding the right visual voice for each story – whether it’s a playful comic, a gentle fairytale, or a moody atmospheric piece.
For me, working consciously with style is a way to not only tell a story, but also reinforce its tone and emotion.
